Dress in layers, long sleeve shirts long johns, couple pairs of socks, remember you can always take stuff off if you get too hot, or wet.
NO COTTON! Outdoor enthusiasts have the saying “cotton kills” because cotton aborbs moisture but doesn’t get rid of it. Your best bet is with synthetic fibers (i.e. polyester blends, polypropelene) which wicks moisture way from the skin and lets it evaporate. Examples of garments that use these materials include Nike Dri-Fit and polar fleece. Start with a close fitting base layer and increase layers as you see fit for the weather. Layering allows flexibility in regulating your temperature depending on how active you are.
